Objective

In this exercise, you will add a column to the client display and change the sort order.

Facts

Add Taxpayer E-Mail Address to your client display and sort by this new column.

Program Considerations

The Clients tab displays columns of information from clients in the database. The default display categories are:

The only permanent column in the display is the Client Number column. The first column on the Clients tab determines how the information is sorted.

Network Considerations: This option is workstation-specific and has no affect on other network users.

How?

To add columns to the display and change the sort order:

  1. On the Settings menu, click Options.
  2. Click the Display tab.
  3. Select the view you wish to modify in the Client View list.
  4. In the Available list, click + next to Client Information to expand the list, and click Taxpayer E-Mail Address.
  5. Click > to add it to the display.
  6. By default, the Automatically adjust column widths and the Left Column Fixed boxes are checked. Keep them checked if you want to fit the columns to the size of the window and display the left column when you scroll the list to the right.

Next, you are going to change the sort order.

  7. Click Taxpayer E-Mail Address in the Display list.
  8. Click the Up button until Taxpayer E-Mail Address is at the top of the Display box. Note that Taxpayer E-Mail Address appears in the Sort by field.
  9. Click OK.

Tips & Shortcuts

You can manually adjust the column widths if you don't check Automatically adjust column widths in the Display options. Point to the dividing line between the columns you want to change until the pointer becomes a double line, then click and drag the column to the desired location.

You can also change the order of the columns by clicking on a column heading and dragging it to the position you want.

Troubleshooting

Problem: I cannot read the column headings.

Solution: Manually adjust the column widths as described above, or open the Options and check the Automatically adjust column widths box at the Display tab.
